Like the rest of her family, Boone has never given up hope that Portia would return. He summons the town doctor and Portia's parents, and sets out to put this beautiful, broken woman back together again.
Through her family's love and Boone's gentle affection, Portia gradually comes back to herself, and starts to fall for her old friend in a whole new way. "An Emotional Rollercoaster Ride!"
Overall
Performance
Story
Devil’s Lake by Aaron Lazar was a sobering intense story of what is sadly too real! This book will hit a lot of emotions as a reader that will have your heart pumping for the danger and for the tender parts of closeness. This review is based on the audio version of the book narrated by Gwendolyn Dryer. She had me at the edge of what is next feeling! Since this book was dedicated to the young ladies that were kidnapped in Ohio. It lends that is the primary topic of this book. Abductions by those we see as normal on the outside yet very scary on the inside to the captives. This story was so well layout in a timeline that is so believable. Right out of too many headlines. It will leave you with maybe some feelings you did not have before. It really draws you in. It is a bit of an underlying love story as well.

This story surrounds a young college student, Porsche that was kidnapped at the closing of a garden center where she work at. Watched indiscreetly by a patron that for hours looking at the flowers in the garden center. Putting some in his basket putting some back. Nothing that Porsche has not seen with avid gardeners. Upon the closing of the store Porsche asked the gentlemen to make his final selections and he ends up bringing to the counter a single geranium. After closing up and feeling uncomfortable over the whole situation. Porsche locks up and finds herself approached from behind and a rag put over her mouth. So now I am getting ahead of myself.

The story opens as Porsche is racing home to her parents. Her little dog Cupcake right by her side. “We’ll be home soon.” That is all she could think of. Gone 2 years. 2 long years. Had her family given up hope that she was still alive or were they resolved she was dead and they would never see her again. Rushing into her parent’s home calling out their names. Where was everyone? Then a deep voice comes from behind her and she starts to panic. With relief seeing that it was not her capture that followed her but, she kept telling herself all the way home that she knew that she has killed him! “Who are you?” Is all she can say as she surveys his eyes, his face and broad shoulders? “You know who I am Peaches! It’s Boone.”

Boone a childhood friend is helping take care of the farm. As he explains to Porsche where her mom and dad is. That her sister is now married to a college professor. Knowing that she would not see them till the next day. Boone sees that she is in dire straits he finally talks her into eating, showering and getting some rest. Knowing that her parents were out of town she knew he was right. She would see them tomorrow.

The absolute joy when Porsche is finally reunited with her family is very uplifting. Aaron really hit the nerve of all the emotions that just pour out with the reunion. The questions of where she was the last 2 years. What was happening with her mom’s health? How or did her sister Grace beat her addiction from her actions? Who was her new husband and how did they meet? I find that all the questions are unraveled in the story at a nice pace.

How even after 2 years she could still see her sister really didn’t change all that much even being married. Why? Was she now jealous of the attention that Porsche is getting? However, as the story unfolds and Porsche starts telling the family her story her sister Grace finds that she can’t help wondering and wanting to feel for her sisters’ distain for her capturer named Murphy. To protect her.

Now, the story goes back to the beginning of my review. Porsche now tells them how the capture unfolds to a cabin at Devil’s Lake, WI. The things that Porsche’s capturer makes her do. Now home will she never want another man? Did she kill this man? Afraid that Porsche will be arrested for his murder. If indeed he was killed when she finally escape. Boone and Grace’s husband Anderson head to WI to find out. What steps will they take to protect her throughout the story?

After returning back to the farm in Vermont to inform her that he was not dead based on the information she gave them. Now she feared that her capturer is coming to seek her down. What risk will he take to get her back? Was her family and the police ready to take on one guy? Only this time he takes her sister Grace. Is her capturer ready for her sister’s strong will? Will everyone find her sister in time? What happens between Boone and Porsche? Will there be a happy ending? I will not spoil the stories ending for you.

The narrator Gwendolyn Druyer, is my first experience listening to her. She did a wonderful job with the list of characters she had to perform. She did have the same similar voice as I have heard with other female narrators. A soothing voice when needed. To a scared voice of Porsche and Grace as they were held captive. The male voices I could tell the difference but found Boone’s voice a bit too sultry at times when I didn’t feel it fitting. She capture the mood of each of the scenes and the transition from character to character. I will be looking for her name in future narrations she performs. Whether for any of Aaron’s books or for other authors. Well done Gwendolyn!

I highly recommend this book from young adult +. I would even recommend this for young teen girls to listen to. Being a mother and knowing what I have heard over the years from my girls of not being afraid. This book makes me afraid for them.

Please note that this book was provided to me by the author. In no way was his or anyone else influenced me in the final review of the book. Please feel to comment and if you feel my review was helpful please like it!

Tombstones by Anthony Crowley
by Joan Pavlick
[synopsis]
Tombstones by Anthony Crowley. Narrated/Performed by Alan Weyman. 1 hour and 32 mins long. Genre Fiction, and Horror. Publisher, Anthony Crowley & Crowley Creations; 1st Edition (March 5, 2014), 130 pages.

Tombstones by Anthony Crowley was a first time experience for me. A combination throughout the book of short verses of Horror, Thriller and paranormal genres. I found this to be quite exhilarating change of pace from my normal listens. With a short listen of 1 hour and 32 minutes these verses can be listen to in one sitting as I did. However, I found I needed to borrow the book itself for my kindle to follow along with the audio that was provided to me Audio Book Reviewer for an honest review. I would highly recommend with the purchasing of this audio to get the companion book as well. Especially, if like me being a first time listener to this type of writing.

So as I went along listening to the books verses, I could not help but fall into a sort of trance or hypnotized set by the mood of the book. Mostly though by the narrators voice of raspy, grim and gloom. Alan Weyman’s raspy voice set the mood of the verses. He performed this so well that you could not help but, get caught up in it.

There were several lines throughout that stood out the verses to me as the listener. There were ones that make that indentation in your mind and stay there. It was listening to Edgar Allan Poe’s macabre way of writing. These are the lines that stood out to me:

RED ICE

He said, “The land of mystical illusions shall come, you’ll see”.

RAVEN BLACK

“Pure as the dead of thunder

The flow of the moon eclipse

Enchantment of darkness”

MY FRIEND DARKNESS

“I fell from the heavens storm because I lost my soul”

And finally one more that stood out, even though there were more that I booked marked as listening.

SEDUCING GARGOYLES

“Slithering and mischievous

Cunning and strong

Wings of ecstasy”

The book had a flow of words that only Anthony Crowley could have created into such a way. That you will want to listen/read this in one sitting. Then maybe in another one.

As mentioned, earlier Alan Weyman gothic raspy voice pulled this collection of verses together in such a way. It felt like he was weaving the words into such a way that I felt like I was listening to old horror thriller movies featuring Boris Karloff or Vincent Price. He would pick up his voice or slow down where needed. Pauses were perfection. 2 thumbs up! Well performed!!!!

I highly recommend this book to those into any of the horror, thriller, and paranormal genres. Even if you don’t listen to verses type books. Just like me you will be captivated.

As I mentioned this audio was provided to me from Audio Book Reviewer to listen and give an honest review. All statements above are mine and have been in no way influenced by others. Please like and comment. If you dislike comment as well.

The Temple is Not My Father: A Story Set in India by Rasana Atreya. Narrated/performed by Shruti Kapdi. Length 1 hours and 34 mins. Contemporary Fiction. Novella. (May contain some spoilers in the beginning of review)

This story really drew me in and I was quite taken back on the Indian traditions. Traditions that go back a 100+ years. Such a wide awaking to the non-traditional American traditions of how a family is ruled by the father’s law. What he says goes even in this modern day.

The story starts out in a village of a woman Godavari and her daughter Sreeja. How their village shuns them from participating anything from sending her daughter to school to the woman getting a job in the town. All from when her father sold her to the temple to be married to the Goddess to become a prostitute to satisfied men and their sexual appetites at a girl’s very young age.  Her mother horrified by what her husband did leaves him to take care of her granddaughter when Godavari gets pregnant. Then behind his back made sure that the money left to her by her mother went to Godavari. All Godavari wanted was a better life for her daughter.

Then enters the story two young American-Indian girls. When they find out that this woman and her daughter is related to them. Without, the knowledge of their grandmother that they were sent to live with. Since their father felt that the American lifestyle was corrupting their young minds. They needed to learn the tradition of a proper Indian women.

They start to visit their cousin during their grandmother’s prayer time. The girls in the beginning decide that the youngest one would hang out with the daughter and agreed to teach her math and English with other things. The oldest of the girls hung out with the mother learning how to cook traditionally and learn the dialect. Over time the mother asked why they were sent there. The oldest one in her American way of speaking was sometimes hard for Godavari to understand. Though she learn what their father did by sending them to live with their grandmother. They learned off each other American and the Indian dialect of the area. The mother would eventually tell this young girl why the two of them really should not be there in her home. That it would tarnish their reputation. Then the grandmother finds out sending the girls away.

This story drew me in with the harsh story of the life that both fathers felt was the where women are to be placed in society. What Godavari does to give her daughter a better life.  How the young American girls thought that their father was so harsh sending them to India only to see that Godavari’s life was much worst. I felt like I was listening to something from the early 20th century not 21st century way of life. This short novella really hit me in the heart.

This is a must listen to for I don’t want to be a spoiler to the entire story but, when the story does come full circle is does tug on every heart string imaginable. Shruti Kapdi did an excellent job performing the Indian and American dialects of the women. The harsh realities are brought to life as she tells and expresses the conversations of all the characters. Rasana Atreya has a magic way of expressing her words.

Even though this was short and I felt that it could have been a much longer with more detailing to the story. However, the story comes across as written. This book is not available yet as WhisperSync but, I do recommend that you by the book as a companion to the audio since some parts I did have an issue with the accent. Rewind and listen again and all was fine.

This book was provided to me for an honest review by the author. All comments above are solely mine and no one has influenced my review. Please like and comment below. I love to hear if my review helped you in listening or reading this novella.

Windrusher by Victor DiGenti. Performed by Kenny James. A story about a cat called Windrusher and his human family the Tremble. The Tremble family had a big change to their lives when the father finally agreed to take over the family hotel in Florida.  Since he could not find a job after being laid off from a job he had for many years in the bank. Since their cat named Tony (aka Windrusher) did not like riding in the car, in a cat carrier to keep him under control. They knew the long ride from the north to Florida was just not going to happen. So the Tremble’s brother-in-law said that they would take Tony into their home.

What Tony could not understand is why the family dog was getting to go and not him. He was mortify that his family was leaving him being. Why would the Trembles’ do such a thing to him? He would not stand for it and would find them. Windrusher when he showed up on the Tremble’s doorstep and was taken in. He enjoyed being a part of something special. Not since his mom was there when he was a kitten. Teaching him that he was part of something special. Where they could trace their lineage back to the pyramids. How the Goddess of the Cats saved them all the making it a better world for cats. How there are special cats that live forever when they are favored by the gods. How each cat is born with a name from their mother and then the name that they take? Windrusher came by his name from a dream he had. Everyone laugh at him for taking on such a name. Well, now he will live up to his name. He wanted his Tremble family and he was willing to do whatever it takes to find them.

This book was filled with so much adventure that you can’t help cheer Windrusher and the friends Scowldown and Little One, make their way to the warm waters. Some other cats along the way helping him making his journey.  Even a few humans that didn’t even know they were helping him. Then there are those that make an enemy of Windrusher. The humans that he calls Hiscos (sorry did not have the book for the correct spelling) that take him in and give him a home. But, he needs to get back to his family and leaves each new family in search of his old one. Will the love of a cat that makes his insides Purr out of control name Silk Blossom make him want to settle down? Will Windrusher make it home? All great questions that will be answered in this 9+ hour book.

I would put this in a Contemporary & Fantasy genre. So if this for you then go for it. However, this book is part of a trilogy. First one only in Audio.

This is my thoughts of the audio. So I am not a cat lover per say. Since I always had dogs. However, I am a sucker for great animal stories. I did receive this book from Audio Book Reviewer for an honest review. I honestly can say that I found myself caught up in this story. I was quite surprise that since this book was out since 2004 that there would have been more reviews. Those that are out there were for the positive. With the release this year of the audio version. I think that this will certainly spark a renewal in the story and series. This story really has a lesson to teach about the kindness and unfortunately the true reality of meanness. It is certainly a book that kids and old alike will fall into wanting to know Windrushers’ adventure across many states.

I loved the strong animal connection to his humans. I enjoyed the way the author takes the reader into another world of the cat. Who can’t say that this is not really happening where cats have that inner ear? That they can hear their spiritual leader direct them on the correct path. The journey that each one of the cats in the story have to endure. It is a story that keeps you wondering if Windrusher and his friends will ever make it. I wondered how Mr. DiGenti book could fill the 9+ hour audio book. The story does go from Windrushers’ and the Trembles’ journey in Florida. He did fill the 9+ hours with no trouble.

The narrator Kenny James performed the book at an even voice as he read through the story. This is my first time listening to him and felt he did a great job. He did throw in some voices for the humans and cats. But, for the most part it was just his own voice.  He had me laughing out loud throughout on some of the characters he did the voices for. I would listen to him again. Just to see how he would do with a different genre. That he follows up with the other 2 books in the trilogy as well.

I do like the cover of the book. Gives you the visual of Windrusher. Not sure of who the face is supposed to represent maybe his girl human he misses and is in the search of. All the same it was a nice cover. I know that I would highly recommend this to all animal lovers not just the cat lovers. For kids they will be asking for their own Windrusher (Smiling). I would say 9 years and older. Younger kids may get upset on some of the cat scenes.

This book was provided by Audio Book Reviewer. All thoughts are mine and no one influence my review. Please comment and like this review. I love to hear from you! Happy Listening!

My Review from Audible and other sites

"If you enjoyed Divergent you'll love BOTANICAST"
Overall
Performance
Story
I always start my reviews by reviewing the narrator. Since they are the voice that makes or breaks a performance of the book! Will it want to make you want to go back and read the book! Meghan Kelly as in other books I have listen to her narrate excels in a flawless transition from one character to the next. Maintaining that difference or mood of the character as they journey thru this book by Tam Linsey. I do hope that she is brought back for any future sequels. There is nothing more disappointing when authors use another voice in a series. She really brings to life and moods of my favorite character Dr Tula Macoby.

So let me continue with the characters without giving many spoilers! Dr. Tula Macoby coming from a society called the Haldanians, that believes can help selected others from the bio-engineered weeds that wiped out plant life 400 years earlier making all plants poison. Tula, a counselor assigned to those that are converted with photosynthetics to adjust to their new lifestyle. A society/scientist that believes they are the saviors of sorts in converting the cannibals that also roam the Earth. They also decide who lives or dies if their capturers do not fit the profile of converting to a plant society. Believing that her way of life will save them. That is until she meets Levi Kraybill whom she believes in the beginning is part of a captured cannibal family. Only to find out he is from another society called the The Old Order. Feeling that her people may not have all the answers. With him as the story unfolds throughout she learns the truth behind her own past! Trying to understand why her feelings are so passionate for someone of a different culture and to wrong yet feels so right at the same time.

Tam Linsey takes and draws you into the passion! Into the uncertainty! Into the truth that maybe bought her and Levi together are not ready to face about each other!

Levi Kraybill is from a society that believes what Tula's kind are doing is an abomination. They are a peaceful farming community. Believing that God has sent them down the rules to believes are they the only way of life!

After Tula assist Levi to escape and now making them both outlaws on the run from the Haldandians! Tula learns from him the survival tactics as they travel back to his society without being captured by the cannibals or killed by the Burners. Learning along the way that Levi was on the search for a cure for his son. Only to be saved/captured by what they thought is a fourth society, Fossilites. Which they did not know existed. Only to find out that all those Tula thought were killed are actually used for experiments of a different kind for the search for immortality. Will Tula make the decision to stay with them if they are willing to give Levi the cure they said they had for his son? Will his clan let him back? Since leaving against the Old Orders rules shunned Levi!

They do escape and head for Levi's clan with 2 of the ones Tula thought were killed by her people. When they get back to Levi's home. Are they all left to come within the Old Order's protective field? What does Tula learn about herself? Will they accept her and the other 2 Haldadians? What becomes of Levi's son?

Leaving some of these unanswered will peak a curiosity that you will not be sorry to learn as the book whines down. There is not a real cliffhanger leaving this book up in the air till part 2. It can stand as a stand alone read/listen to. Made me wish that I could move to the next book now! I really was pleasantly surprised with this story after listening to and reading other post apocalypse novels. This is certainly a well thought out plot. Totally different! The story can definitely take itself in any direction for future parts. I would like to see the following part have that back story of how the weeds took over the other plants. Seeing it build around Levi and/or Tula family ancestors. This 10 hr plus listen really felt so much longer. Ready for a detail yet full story made me want to sit and listen right thru in a day or 2.
