THROWBACK THURSDAY - MOUNT VERNON LOVE STORY BY Mary Higgins Clark

THROWBACK THURSDAY

Book Blurb from Audible

Publisher's Summary

Charming, insightful and immensely entertaining in its unique presentation of one of America's legendary figures, Mount Vernon Love Story, by famed suspense writer Mary Higgins Clark, shows the reader the man behind the legend, a man of flesh, blood and passion, and in the author's skilled hands, the story and the man come fully and dramatically alive.
Mary Higgins Clark's interest in George Washington was first sparked by a radio series she was writing in the 1960s, called "Portrait of a Patriot," vignettes of American presidents. Always a lover of history, she wrote this biographical novel -- her first book -- and titled it Aspire to the Heavens, which was the family motto of George Washington's mother. With all events, dates, scenes and characters based on historical research, the book was published in 1969. Its recent discovery by a Washington family descendent led to its reissue under its new title, Mount Vernon Love Story.
In researching George Washington's life, Mary Higgins Clark was surprised to find the engaging man behind the pious legend. He was a giant of a man in every way, starting with his physical height. In an era when men averaged five foot seven inches, he towered over everyone at six foot three. He was the best dancer in the colony of Virginia. He was also a master horseman, which was why the Indians gave him their highest compliment: "He rides his horse like an Indian." She dispels the widespread belief that although George Washington married an older woman, a widow, his true love was Sally Carey Fairfax, his best friend's wife. Martha Dandridge Custis was older, but only by three months - she was 27 to his 26 when they met. Mary Higgins Clark describes their relationship from their first meeting, their closeness and his tenderness toward her two children.

My thoughts on this book
AMAZING!
So getting ahead of myself. With my excitement about it when I listened to this book so many years ago. I found that this was an intriguing book outside something that Mary Higgins Clark would write. As I read the book blurb above my love for history just coupled with her writing set me popping that first cd into my player. (Yes, that long ago lol).
The performance by Linda Edmond was so brilliant as telling it as a story teller. How Ms. Clark researched out this story of George and Martha's life together. His love for another that he knew he could not have. Only to find his infatuation with Martha so filled his life and heart.
This is one book that maybe not in the near future but in time will be revisited again. For the less than 6 hours. You will find yourself hanging on every word of her book. Linda Edmond does it so well that you will other books that she narrates as well.
So do yourself a favor if you have not listened to this wonderful story. Make the time. You will surely be pleased with the tale especially if you are a history buff.

Publisher's Summary

Ennara and the Fallen Druid is a 2013 winner of the Moonbeam Children's Book Awards.
Eleven year-old Ennara Gaern has a serious grudge against the dragon on her right hand.
Born with a mask that foretold magical powers, she was immediately inked with the fiendish, fire-breathing tattoo that forces her to study boring texts, cover her hand continuously, and worst of all, keeps her from visiting the beautiful capital city, Dordonne. But her quiet life changes when one night she is attacked by a shadowy demon.
Tork, an old friend and wizard, is enlisted to help. But when he arrives, he informs Ennara's parents that she is her world's only hope of finding the legendary Sword of Gisilfrid, which is needed to destroy the curse that is creating the demons. Ennara doesn't want to leave on the dangerous quest, but when she learns the curse threatens her world, she reluctantly agrees.
Ennara and the wizard begin a perilous journey to the Sunken City, pitting them against dangerous oceans and pirates intent on claiming Ennara's magic as their own. With only her friends at her side, including the intelligent, aquatic cat Smoos, Ennara must defeat monsters guarding the sword and servants of the Fallen Druid. When her world is covered in darkness, will she know how to dispel the curse?

My Review as posted by Audio Book Reviewer to Audible and ABR

Ennara’s story is a wonderful story by Angela Myron and listen that is narrated by Crystal Marcano. I find that this is a great long trip listen for the whole family. At 5 hours and 13 mins. This is great for those that love paranormal stories filled with wizards, witches and we cannot forget the dragon. The wait of each action scene is “Can Ennara do it?” “Can she get them out of this?” leaves the reader asking this throughout the book.

So wait! Getting ahead of myself! Angela Myron has all the important ingredients to the plot of this story. Young characters that young readers/listeners can relate to. Starting with 11 year old Ennara and her friend Kithe. Ennara bears a tattoo of a dragon on her wrist. Which she is always told not to reveal it. Under her Aunt’s guidance of teaching Ennara the trade of being a witch. That someday she will save the world. Something that Ennara found so farfetched that she can do such a task. The time period is of the Druids. Traveling by horse, boat and by foot.

Under the guidance of a Wizard and friend named Tork. The two of them set out on a journey to retrieve the sword called “Sword of Gisilfrid” to destroy the curse that is creating demons called Shadowspawn. In this quest it is predictable as with most stories the friend always ends up following and ends up in the adventure. Kithe is no different. However, what I do like about this character as not seen with many sidekicks. Kithe even at the young age the author has him at has a clearer and much stronger head on his shoulders. So that when Ennara seems to drift towards the bad he helps her stay on a steady course. Ennara has two sides to her magic, good and bad that she is not under full control of yet. Both sides of the magic however, helps in saving them all for the most part throughout the story. However, Tork reminds her to be mindful of not using the bad magic. The travel to the city of Dordonne with Tork, Ennara and Kithe to get supplies as they leave to the Sunken City to retrieve the Sword. An apothecary where they are picking up some of the supplies they will need for the trip. A shop keeper ask Ennara to retrieve a bracelet that she tells her is of no importance. Kithe is an important part to the scene is all I will tell you.

Along the way Tork encounters trouble with a Shadespawn and goes into a deep sleep. Braving pirates and the rough seas as the try to get to the Sunken City. It is now up to Ennara and Kithe to not only save Tork but everyone. Adding to the twosome is 2 more important supporting characters. A young boy a bit older than them named Gavin and a special marine cat named Smoos.

Yes, this book is predictable. But, it is geared towards 8-12 year olds. However, anyone older will also enjoy the listen. The narrator Crystal Marcano did an amazing and believable job with each of the characters and their voices. The only voice that seemed really young was Tork. Being an older man he seemed to be their age. I did enjoy the accents since it was more of a Scottish placed story.

A bonus to the listening of this first book is that the author included a bit of the second book. I would have missed it if I did not shut off my kindle I was using to listen to the book. So keep going as you get to the end. Needs a bit of editing in my opinion to say, “Now for a preview of the upcoming book! “Ennara and the Book of Shadows” It gives the listener something to look forward to. Then give the credits at the end

As others that have read the book. I have to agree that there is a bit of a Harry Potter feel to the story with the main character being a girl. Something I enjoy seeing is a strong female character and I have been seeing a lot of that lately.

The cover of the book is simply delightful. Fits the characters perfectly. I look forward to the release of the 2nd audio book.

HUMPBACK WEDNESDAY - Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

HUMPBACK WEDNESDAY REVIEW

Narrated by Jennifer Ikeda
24 hrs and 2 mins
Sci-fi & Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance

Book Blurb from Audible
Publisher's Summary
A richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.
Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries - and she is the only creature who can break its spell.
Debut novelist Deborah Harkness has crafted a mesmerizing and addictive read, equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense. Diana is a bold heroine who meets her equal in vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and gradually warms up to him as their alliance deepens into an intimacy that violates age-old taboos. This smart, sophisticated story harks back to the novels of Anne Rice, but it is as contemporary and sensual as theTwilight series - with an extra serving of historical realism.

My review from Audible

What did you love best about A Discovery of Witches?
I love how Deborah Harkness develops the characters by pulling parts of their personalities slowly and then moving into each of their past lives as a steady pace throughout the book. So you are hooked all the way to the very end.

What did you like best about this story?
How each character blended so well with each other whether it was a friendly or not so friendly scenes. I love how the dry humor throughout the book. The tenderness between the main Characters of Matthew and Diana. Yet the strength that is added to the characters.

What does Jennifer Ikeda bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I  love how she kept the flow of the character voices. I have listen to many audio books and she is now on my list of listen to narrators!

Any additional comments?
I purchase this book on a sale and when I found out another series book. Well I love series, and this book has exceeded my expectations. From the story line to the narration. Just finish the first one. now onto book 2nd and hope that book 3rd hits the site soon!

My Review from Audible

This is an extremely cute and amusing audio listen of the book! Because I am a huge fan of audio books and how narrators portrays them. This is the way for the young to the young at heart to listen to this story. This book had me laughing out loud from time to time and smiling all the way thru! Why you ask?

Well, first off this has to be one of the cleverest plots that I have heard in young children's book. Miss Mae has put together in this short 2 hrs and 19 mins of story in such a way you can not but listen from start to finish! The characters each have their own personalities. Starting the story out as a young girl playing hide and seek with her boy cousins decides a good hiding spot is this large cardboard box. Unknowing to her the boys have a plan and tape her up in the box to ship her off the to Himalayans. However, the postman being drunk sent her off to an entirely different place, No Particular Place fill with the tropics and all those wonderful animals.

One day Sir O. Yuri Wiseguy-eh comes to the island and sees the young girl now all grown up. He invites her to come to Gum Drop Island. However, every time they say those 3 words - good gracious - music plays. Heading to Gum Drop Island The Narrator (the girl on the island) meets a bevy cast of characters. Each one with their own quirks and cute personalities.

Finding themselves going to Moldy Corners to where all the candy is grown and shipped all over the world. Wondering why a shortage?. Now each time someone ask where they are from or says "Gum Drop Island" the music gets louder and louder. The narrator and all the characters set themselves on a mission to find how they can bring sun back to Moldy Corners to get rid of the mold and get the trees growing candy again and stop that darn awful music. (If it was me producing this audio since the narrator did such an awesome job. I would have added in that music since I have heard music throughout other books - Just saying) Will they find and solve this annoying music? How are the two related?

The Narrator the one actually reading the story, but in the book itself calls herself The Narrator since she has no name. Even though the narration is done by Owen McCuen he entertainingly does every characters voice from the Narrator to Sir O. Yuri Wiseguy-eh to well-known journalist I.B. Nosey. Long ride in the car - pop this in for the kids and they will be laughing all the way! But, make sure that ride is over 2 hrs or you will be sitting in the car till it is done.

The cover is very inviting and makes you wonder if it is I.B. Nosey is the one telling the story. Great job by the author and the narrator! Really can't wait to hear another adventure when it come out!

My review posted to Audible and other sites:

Diary of a Small Fish by Pete Morin is a riveting political thriller. Set in Boston, MA. Pete has pulled out all the punches in this novel about how those behind the scenes seem to always be the ones pulling the strings to get what they want. Lobbyist and other concerned parties. Found that this novel kept my attention from start to finish. The characters were all well written into a suspenseful drama of cat and mouse. But, it actually ended up with the mouse trapping the cat. I actually listened to it in 2 days.

The main character Paul Forte finds himself in trouble. He is counsel of Boston’s MBTA and representative. He is subpoenaed to give testimony against another representative. Only to find himself days later being in the same shoes. Why? For playing too much golf? All Paul could think of was “Are they for real!” His wife of 10 years leaves him and now he meets this beguiling woman who/becomes his girlfriend. She has a past that Paul just wants some answers to since she is not ready to leave him in her bed.

Then there is Bernard Kilroy from his father’s past. He is now his enemy. Why? How does his part play into this indictment that ends up dragging on for a year? Paul’s attorney plays his part but, Paul wants to dig deeper. Why would golfing get him landed into the slammer. So he went golfing with lobbyist and others. Is that a crime? This all plays out well for a time for the prosecution. However, Paul is not taking this sitting down by his lawyer’s rules. He is going to find out who is behind this and that is where an FBI agent in the investigation slips some suggestions to Paul.

This book will leave you routing for Paul all the way thru. How he finally finds out the truth behind his girlfriend and how their relationship grows. How Paul’s ex-wife reenters the picture due to cancer. How this helps build the bound between his girlfriend and Paul. Their love for his ex-wife thru her medical care. I felt myself welling up inside.

So whether you read this book or listen to it you will find yourself not wanting to put the book down. Narrator, Keith Sellon-Wright was dead on with the New England accents. He played thru each part seamless with a first rate performance. I know he is on my list of narrators to watch for in other books. As the author for I will be putting his books on my wish list.

This book was provided by the author. In no way was I influenced by the author or others for this review. All views are my own. I always welcome comments and likes if this help you decide on reading or listening to this book.

My Review from Audible

"Steamy! Hot! Did I say Hot!"
Overall
Performance
Story
Well let me start off by this is one audio that you shouldn’t listen in the car like I did. This is one hot werewolf love story. Becca Jameson’s short 3+ hour audio read by Meghan Kelly was a really well written short story about the werewolf clans selecting their soul mates.

Plot: So families with their teenage children go to the wolf gathering to have the male werewolf’s pick their female mates for life. Well for one girl, Mackenzie Davis, her mother drags her to this year’s gathering against her wishes for she has a human boyfriend. She does not want a wolf mate. Her boyfriend calls in that morning to cancel there get together that day. So Mackenzie (all call her Mac) agrees “Only one day mom!” Not ready to expose a hidden secret that she has held in from on previous wolf gathering. Her main reason for not wanting a wolf mate but, not willing to share with her mother about it. What Mac was not ready for was him!

Drake Shelton from Texas just like Mac he does not want a mate. He wants to be a certified bachelor. All he could think of is that girl that eluded him on the last Gathering as she was being taken out of the room by another. Little did he know that she did not succumb to the other wolf? Or his not so charms.

But, as he enters the room can it be true! He smells her scent. No can’t be she was taken or was she? Mac annoyed with the festivities leaves the room to be alone. She passes Drake and he could not let her get away this time. Calling her boyfriend she comes to learn what her sister has been saying for weeks. He tells her that he is gay. As Drake goes out to speak to her. Mac can feel the sparks begin to fly between them.

“This cannot be”, thinks Mac. She just found out her boyfriend is gay and how could she be attracted to a wolf! What happens next is something both of them well Mackenzie does not want to admit to. Drake is so pumped up by her that he is having a difficult time containing himself. But, he does.

After her moments with Drake, Mackenzie decides that she does not want go the next day to the gathering. She could not face Drake after the events of the day before. It just was not right she can’t be attracted to him. Little does she know that her sister the day before gave Drake their address and he shows up on her door step. He makes her a proposition that she reluctantly agrees to go back to Texas with him. She’ll prove that this is not a match for life.
Without giving up the rest of this listen/story. Does Mackenzie fall for Drake? Is she everything he ever dreamed of? What is Mackenzie’s secret that she finally shares with Drake? Something that she never even shared with anyone. Will this be a happily ever after? You will not be disappointed that is all I can say about this short read!

The Narrator: Another marvelous performance by Meghan Kelly. I have listen to her in other audio mediums and she more than hit the characters on the head here! Like I said this is not a book that you should listen to while driving. Meghan really cranked up the steam where the steam needed to be. She portrayed Mac’s feelings so well. She really has me a lifetime fan of her works!

The Cover: I do like the cover it shows just what kind of feelings end up between Mackenzie and Drake!
